Several weeks later during a student council meeting at school, Gina asks to open the office of student body president to girls as well as boys. The proposal passes and she is persuaded to run. Then Gina discovers that she is pregnant. She tells her mother and is stunned to learn that her mother got unexpectedly pregnant in high school before marrying Gina's father and Gina was the result. Her mother urges her to have an abortion. At first, Gina agrees, but then she decides not to go ahead with the abortion saying, "If my mother had done it, I wouldn't be here." Gina returns to school and in a campaign speech she tells the student body that she has learned responsibility and how to live with the consequences of what you do.
